Space Hound 4 - [ About Program Options ]
Program Options - The Program Options Form is a Tabbed Display which allows you to set usage and functional preferences.
NOTE: Most options require that you use the APPLY Button in order to set them. However, there are a few options that are immediately set as selected. The list of Excluded Folders is one example.
Also, some program options will require a program restart before they become effective.Search Options: You can perform a faster search by excluding certain folders from the search process. These include Temporary Internet Files, Windows Folders, Program Files, Files in the Recycle Bin, and files already placed on the Pending Deletes List.
You can also exclude any other folder structure desired by adding it to the list of Excluded Folders. This is helpful because it allows you to bypass files which belong to another user such as their own private set of Temporary Internet Files.
Advanced Settings: These options include the following:
Allow Program to Automatically Check for Updates - This is only recommended if you have an always on connection to the Internet such as via Cable Modem, DSL, or other high speed connection. It causes the program to go online and inspect a small web page that documents the most recent version of the program. If the latest version is newer than the one you have, you can choose to download and install the update from within the program itself. Note: Some Firewalls prohibit this activity for security reasons.
Show Selected File Icon on Displays - This is a minor performance feature. If you choose to show the Selected File Icon (located at the bottom of most displays) then each time you click a file, it causes the program to access the file and determine it's Icon Image or in some cases, the Icon Image of the Program that uses the particular File.
Use Access97 Format for Database Exports - This is a special feature that allows you to export into older versions of Microsoft Access. You should not check this unless you are using Access 97.
Announce Search Completion - Minor feature that triggers the sound of a dog barking when a long search (more than a few minutes) is completed to alert you that the program is ready to provide additional processing.
Welcome Bark upon Launch - Historically, the evaluation edition of Space Hound used this (somewhat annoying) sound of a dog barking as a registration incentive to encourage people to buy the program. After registration, the barking didn't occur however I had complaints from users who missed the sound so it was added back in as an optional setting.
Disable Animations - This is for users who don't like to see animations within their applications.
Play Music while Searching - Just a minor feature to help pass the time on a long search.
Disable Thumbnail Viewer - This is a performance issue. Images take time to load and resized to fit the area of the Thumbnail Window. Checking this makes the program a bit faster when changing the currently selected file.
Disable Cloudscape Backgrounds on Grids - A user option to provide a more business-like background to the various displays. Does not noticeably effect performance.
Disable Main Form Center Logo - A user option to provide a more business-like background to the various displays. Does not noticeably effect performance.
Reset All Settings to Initial Defaults - Many program settings such as column widths are retained whenever changed. This quickly resets all program options back to their original states.
Create Diagnostic Dump - This is a special diagnostic feature that allows the program's developer to help isolate a problem. You will probably never be asked to use this.
Set Default Folder Settings - This allows you to designate a specific folder as the starting folder for any display that shows a Tree View display of your drives and folders.
Manage Zip File Password - You can store a password that will be used anytime the program tries to unzip the contents of a password protected zip file.
Create a Shortcut that uses a Saved Search Parameter - This is not really a program option but there really wasn't another place within the program to place this function without adding complexity to the menus. It's purpose is to create a Desktop Shortcut that will load Space Hound with a designated set of Search Parameters and automatically begin the search process. This can be very useful for frequently needed functionality such as searching for specific files that have been accessed today.
Styles and Colors: These options allow you to change several visual aspects of the program such as colors, logos, etc.
Default Tools: You may designate up to ten specific functions that will be included in the left side menu as Default Tools. Use this to place your most commonly used functions within easy reach to avoid searching through the various sub-menus of the left side Outlook-Style Shortcut bar. The program is initially loaded with the most commonly used features.
