About Windows Folders

Unless you are specifically looking for operating system and application components, you can save time by excluding the Windows Folder structure from your search.  It typically will not contain any user documents however you would find a few image and media files.

Excluding this folder structure during Duplicate File searches is recommended simply because it will produce a number of duplicate file results due to the way modern Windows Operating Systems stores Service Pack uninstalls and backup copies of Protected System Files.

You could accidentally delete files which shouldn’t be removed rendering your computer in-operable. Programs such as Space Hound have historically assumed that any duplicated file is a waste of space and should be deleted.  This is no longer the case.

In many instances, applications require specific versions of various program components such as DLL Files. A specific application may specifically load one of these files from within it's own application folder or point to the shared 'Common' folders.  If you delete one of these, that program may not function correctly afterwards.

Fineware recommends that you leave duplicated DLL files and other program files, as well as their locally stored support files (images, INI files, XML files, etc) alone and focus on just deleting duplicate copies of the files that contain information that you have created or downloaded.

You will find that you can free up huge amounts of space by just eliminating extra copies of multi-media files (images, sound files, videos).
